What is the first thing that comes to mind when we think of Costa Rica?
Beyond its exuberant nature, there are idiosyncrasies that often remain hidden beneath the tourist imagery of a natural paradise. Hredity—an intentional distortion of heredity—observes how “the tico,” as well as its natural environment, has undergone a process of mimicry—transforming, appropriating external customs, and constantly reinventing itself. The
piece invites us to look beyond the landscape and reflect on the layers of heritage, what is one’s own and what is adopted, and on who we are in relation to what we have learned to imitate.
